Hello, angel. ♡
Welcome back to Anatomy of an Angel. I'm so happy you're here. Grab a cozy drink and let's get into today's post!
As you can see from the title, this is the ULTIMATE Guide To Being Rory Gilmore. Rory Gilmore begins as an introverted girl with big dreams and gets there with her hard work and discipline. With that let's begin with her mindset.
One of her most famous quotes is "Who cares if I'm pretty if I fail my finals?". This leads to the mindset where education and studying are the top priorities and that's the mindset you need if you want to be like Rory Gilmore.
Rory Gilmore studies whenever she can or you can find her in a book, where she is still expanding her mind. A great method of studying is active recall; you read an article, watch a video, or learn more about whatever it is that you're learning and write everything you remember down without looking at what you read or watched. You then look back and correct any mistakes and remember any details you forgot. This is great because it means your brain is actually picking up what you're learning. There's another method where you learn about a topic and try to teach it to someone. I forgot what this method is called but it works if you have a friend or classmate that you're studying with and if you're alone, just try to pretend to teach it to yourself or a person a grade below you. Another way to train your brain is to use flashcards for memorization. Rory would use a lot of flashcards during her Chilton era. Speaking of which, there was an episode where she and Lorelai went school supply shopping where she bought legal pads (specifically white because she needs to be serious), 3 highlighters- one goes missing, one dries up, still has one left- an eraser, tons of pens, and number 2 pencils. Rory was super focused on school more than anything so you have to give it your all to your education because not only is it important for your future but also prevents you from making mistakes in different fields, politically, financially, and educationally.
Now we'll be talking about her style! I feel we can all agree that Rory Gilmore is a Downtown Girl kind of aesthetic. I made a little collage of different outfits throughout the show. As we can see, her very first outfit in the first episode with the grandma sweater. That proves what kind of girl she may be, a girl who dress comfortable but also stylish at times. Just like the outfit all the way to the right. She dresses stylish with a dark palette. The outfit in the middle was from her Yale era and she wears dark washed BOOTCUT jeans. I emphasize bootcut because that was a staple in the early 2000s. You can style it with boots or converse or even heels! Though, in that picture Rory wears it with a pair of flats. Although I’ve never seen Rory wear this, I believe that a pleated skirt can match this downtown girl style. Plaid pleated skirt or regular pencil skirt, another suggestion is a denim skirt. These would all fit the “Rory aesthetic” style. For tops, babydoll tops or henley tops layered with tanks tops. Very popular colors for the downtown girl aesthetic are navy blue, brown, white, and burgundy red. Pink is also a good color that can match anything. For the accessories, in the pictures on the bottom we can see Rory wearing a headband and a pair of clips the hold her front pieces of her hair. Rory is a very simple girl who dress simple but flawlessly. She has naturally straight hair but if you’d like, you can do a blowout or curl it- Rory has curled her hair for different occasions. Speaking of appearance, her makeup is simple but YouTube has a lot of tutorials if you'd like to do a full face of makeup. If not, she wears mascara and a little bit of blush with a pink lipgloss!
Now we’ll be talking about hobbies! Other than studying, Rory spends her time watching movies or reading books. Some books she would or have read:
- The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath (anything Sylvia Plath really)
- Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
- Misery - Stephen King
- Moby Dick - Herman Melville
- Pride & Prejudice - Jane Austen
- Our Mutual Friend - Charles Dickens
- Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier
- Rosemary’s Baby - Ira Levin
- The Shining - Stephan King
- To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
These are a few examples of books she’s read and hopefully (if you decide to read them), you take your time and reflect on each book before reading the next. You can do this with annotation, put post-it notes whenever you have a reaction and color code them so you pay attention instead of just reading words on a piece of paper. This makes it more enjoyable.
For movies:
- The Sound Of Music
- Purple Rain
- Casablanca
- Pippi Longstocking
- Dances With Wolves
- Heathers
- Mean Girls
- Annie
- Farewell My Concubine
- Roman Holiday
With each movie, you need an enormous amount of snacks. Grab your favorite snacks and it will be your cheat day. The Gilmore girls watch a large amount of movies so if you ever want a bigger list, search it up on TikTok or Google. You get to pig out whenever you watch a movie, don't forget to rewatch every single movie and then speak during every second!
To continue with hobbies, she'd walk around town with Lane or her mom, Lorelai. Grab a friend and explore your town! Rory would spend most of her time at Luke's diner and loved her coffee. If you don't love coffee, hot chocolate, tea, or matcha is a good substitute. Actually, any drink is okay as long as you love it and try to romanticize it. For example, if you love water, buy a cute water bottle or if you love the Strawberry Dragon Fruit Lemonade Refresher from Dunkin'- my personal favorite, try to make it yourself at home and bring it with you everywhere you go! If I had to drink coffee, I would take it with a lot of sugar and creamers or milk (I have a sweet tooth).
Finally the most important thing of all, be kind! Rory was not as kind during her Yale era as she used to be during her Chilton era. Be kind not just for others but because you'll find that it really does make you feel better as a whole.
If there was anything I didn't cover, be sure to comment about it and I'll make a part 2!
Until next time angels ♡
xoxo,
Mariana
